Before I go into telling you what this wonderful state has to offer here are some trivia facts  about the state that is home to the famous Area 51.

  • Home to not only Area 51 but Las Vegas!

Nevada is known as the land of extremes. Why?! because the weather has no exception. The north has the dry desert lands that holds warm days and extremely cold nights. But that shouldn’t stop me or you from visiting such a wonderful diverse state.

When most people think of Nevada, you think of Las Vegas right?! Don’t answer that because I know your answer is yes. When I think of Nevada, I think about the 5 national parks, Lake Tahoe, famous mining town of  Virginia City, the photography, hiking and the best part of all the wild horses.

Growing up I always came to this state for Lake Tahoe and to visit family. Though as an adult, I have gotten to explore more of what this state has to offer. It’s time to tell you  some of my favorite little places to go an see and maybe tell you where you just might catch a glimpse of wild horses.

In my last post I talked to you about Lake Tahoe which should always be a number 1 stop on your Nevada adventure. Though after you take a trip to Tahoe. Make stop at this famous mining town of Virginia City.

Virginia City

This town is just southeast of Reno and is home to Victorian buildings that were built during the 19th -century mining boom. These buildings are home to the famous Washoe Club and Pipers Opera Club. IMG_2719

Little secret about the Washoe Club and Pipers Opera Club is that they are reportedly haunted. Best part about them being haunted ,is that you can go on a tour looking for ghost, which is pretty awesome and so much fun.  After ghost hunting you can take a stroll down Virgina City main street and grab something to eat at the Red Dog Saloon.

This saloon known for live music, Chicago- style pizza, and cocktails. Everything is great on the menu, walk in grab a seat listen to good music and enjoy your time in a historic 19th-century saloon.

After getting your ghost fix and filling up on some good food. It’s time to go find the best of the best WILD HORSES

You would never think that wild horses exists to this day, but they do!.Nevada is home to most of the nations wild horse population, which is about 67,000 . I have gotten to see this many times while on my Nevada adventures but heres the secret you have to be in areas you would never think and willing to hike, wake up early right before sunrise or wait until sunset.

Here is my go to guide to safety and a sighting that is once in life time that will literally take your breath away.

SAFETY FIRST

  • Maintain A Safe Distance– This is for the safety of the horse and you. It’s surprising how many people ignore this rule.
  • Pay Attention To Body Language– Most horses speak in non-verbal.When a horse is head is low and ears are back, that is an aggressive position where you need to give the animal some breathing space. You will see this a lot from stallions (male).
  • Never Feed Them–  This is very dangerous to the animal. If they are fed foods that aren’t apart of their normal diets, they can get sick and possibly die.
  • Be Calm And Quite– Horses are naturally shy animals, with sudden movements they can run off. If you’re quite they are more willing to stay in the area a lot longer before moving on

Now you know some very important safety tips. Lets get to finding them.

The Virginia Range

  • East of Reno
  • The herd is referred to “Annie’s Horses”
  • Pick any hiking trail and find a watering hole which they will be around

*Horses will always be around bodies of water they tend to drink about  5 to 10 gallons a day

Another place I’ve seen wild horses, which would be the last place anyone would think is the Silver Terrance Cemetery.  I know a cemetery it’s super weird but I’ve seen it and it’s where I have had the best luck.
